J.K. Rowling has released more intimate details of the relationship between two of the most powerful wizards in the Harry Potter universe – Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald, played by Jude Law and Johnny Depp.

The full-length Distinctly Dumbledore bonus feature on the Blu-ray and DVD release of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, features Rowling divulging on the romantic side between Dumbledore and Grindelwald, as reported by Vanity Fair.
Rowling stated there is in fact a sexual depth to the relationship between the two, but that she is more interested in going deeper into the emotional side.
“Their relationship was incredibly intense. It was passionate, and it was a love relationship,” Rowling said. “But as happens in any relationship, gay or straight or whatever label we want to put on it, one never knows really what the other person is feeling. You can’t know – you can believe you know.”
“So I’m less interested in the sexual side – though I believe there is a sexual dimension to this relationship – than I am in the sense of the emotions they felt for each other, which ultimately is the most fascinating thing about all human relationships,” Rowling said.
Ever since Rowling stated that she always saw Dumbledore as being a gay man, upon the book release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, fans have been eager to find out more of the relationship between he and Grindelwald.
Upon the release of the trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald at San Diego Comic-Con last July, the 21-year mystery of what Dumbledore saw in the Mirror of Erised was finally revealed, as we saw Dumbledore seeing an image of Grindelwald.
Director David Yates said in an interview last year that the second installment in the five-film Fantastic Beasts franchise would not specifically address Dumbledore’s sexuality, in which, Rowling received intense backlash for the comment.
Rowling responded to the reaction at the time on Twitter saying, “Being sent abuse about an interview that didn’t involve me, about a screenplay I wrote but which none of the angry people have read, which is part of a five-movie series that’s only one instalment in, is obviously tons of fun, but you know what’s even *more* fun?”
Law explained to EW that Rowling has everything laid out and chose not to have Dumbledore and Grindelwald meet in Fantastic Beasts 2 nor to show their intimate relationship because the reveals will come intentionally over time.
“What you got to remember, this is only the second Fantastic Beasts film in a series and what’s brilliant about Jo’s writing is how she reveals her characters, peels them to the heart over time,” Law said.
