Speaking ahead of his Nice side’s trip to Saint-Étienne tomorrow evening, Christophe Galtier has called for an end to players celebrating in front of opposing fans, indicating that he has told his players to stop doing so.

His words transcribed in RMC Sport, last year’s title winner also reacted to the sanctions imposed on Nice after the pitch invasion and mass brawl that halted their match against Marseille. Galtier underlined his opposition to being made to play behind closed doors, which sanctions the entire crowd over the behaviour of “5% who risk going over the top”.

“We have to ban players from having that connection with opposing supporters. That’s what I tell my players, we don’t need to be provoking anyone. When we score, we’re happy, we go celebrate with our teammates and our supporters, and not in front of the other fans.”

“We have a responsibility in terms of the behaviour of our players, when things are heating up, notably when there are celebrations going on.”
