SYLMAR, CA — Actor Danny Trejo played the hero Wednesday night in Sylmar when he rescued a baby trapped in the wreckage of an overturned SUV. The famed tough guy didn’t hesitate to help after a car ran a red light, slamming into the SUV carrying mother and child.
Three people were hospitalized in the crash, but thanks to Trejo and another bystander, the baby got out safely.
“A young lady had to crawl through the window because I couldn’t get the baby out — I couldn’t unbuckle the seat belt,” he told KTLA. “She got in and undid the seat belt, I pulled the baby out the other side.”
The driver, a woman, suffered injuries and had to be hospitalized, but her main concern was the baby.
“Get my baby, get my baby,” she shouted to Trejo and the young girl who helped free the baby.
Trejo continued to hold and distract the baby while other bystanders helped pull the driver from the car.
The crash occurred in the area of Hubbard Street and Jackman Avenue on Wednesday afternoon shortly after 3 p.m.
Trejo is a prolific movie and television actor and restaurateur known for such films as “Machete” and “Grindhouse.” He’s also known for his Hollywood donut shop Trejo’s Coffee & Donuts at Santa Monica Boulevard and Highland Avenue.
