WELLESLEY, MA — A Wellesley teenager on Thursday will make his U.S Open debut, going up against the likes of Tiger Woods, Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson. At just 17 years old, Michael Thorbjornsen is heading to Pebble Beach, California, after winning last year’s U.S. Junior Amateur title. He’s been training in Florida since.

After winning last year’s junior title, Thorbjornsen took to Instagram, expressing how excited he is to compete in the 2019 U.S. open.

“What an amazing week! This was truly an experience of a life time and can’t wait to come back next year,” Thorbjorsen said in his social media post. “Thanks to everyone who made it possible and helped me along the way … Can’t wait to play in the 2019 U.S. Open!”

Since 2017, Thorbjornsen has stayed busy honing his skills, competing in as many junior and amateur tournaments as he can. In 2018, the young golfer won the Junior Ping Invitational and placed seventh in the Wyndham Invitational. Thorbjornsen also made strong showings in 2017, placing third in the Doral-Publix Junior Classic and second in the AJGA Junior at Blue Hill.

After Thorbjorsen graduates from high school next year, he’ll start his collegiate golf career. He committed to attending Stanford University, according to The Swellesley Report.
