According to police, the investigation revealed that the chunk was likely thrown off the Shelby Avenue Bridge and TDOT inspectors have determined that the concrete was not part of the bridge structure.
Police said the concrete chunk hit the man in his face as he was driving to work at the Nissan plant in Smyrna. The man’s car then sideswiped a pickup truck and a guardrail before coming to a rest on Sillman Evans Bridge.
The victim was identified as Joe Shelton Jr., 54, of Pleasant View.
Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage but do not have a description of the person who may have thrown the chunk.
