TAMPA, FL — Enfamil powdered baby formula has been pulled from CVS pharmacy shelves nationwide after a mother in Tampa found the package had been tampered with and the formula had been replaced with what appeared to be all-purpose flour.

Alison Denning, who bought the formula from a Pinellas County CVS, told television station WFTS the seal on the package lid seemed to be intact, but the interior seal was broken. She said the contents smelled like flour.

The local CVS store offered to return her money, but Denning opted instead to contact manufacturer Mead Johnson and shipped the product back to have it tested.

“I’m not a doctor so I can’t say exactly what straight-up flour would do to an 8-week-old infant, but I can’t imagine it’s very good for them,” Denning told the station.

Both the pharmacy and the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office are investigating.

In a statement, CVS said it takes the tampering complaint seriously and will contact the supplier. The retailer said “as a matter of precaution we have removed all Enfamil products from this store pending the outcome of our investigation.”

CVS said it didn’t find any issues outside of the Oldsmar store where Denning purchased the formula and expects to start selling Enfamil again by the end of day Friday.

There have been similar incidents of Enfamil product tampering around the country. Earlier this month, Arizona mom Chelsea Bellinger told television station KVOA her baby was sick for days after drinking Enfamil formula she later learned contained flour.

In another incident in Arizona, a Tucson woman pleaded guilty in a money-making scheme that involved replacing baby formula with flour to collect refunds, the Associated Press reported.
