The release date for Sony Pictures’ upcoming Grudge reboot has been moved from June 21 to January 3, 2020.

As reported by Deadline, the new date puts Grudge up against a currently untitled film from Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions.

After years of rumblings, the Grudge reboot was officially announced in 2018. At the time, producer Sam Raimi said, “We went back to the original source material to deliver a relentless supernatural thrill ride that explores the horrors of American suburbia.”

Written and directed by Nicolas Pesce, Grudge stars John Cho (Star Trek, Harold & Kumar), Demian Bichir (The Hateful Eight), and Andrea Riseborough (Battle of the Sexes).

The reboot hit a speed bump last July when Taka Ichise, producer of Ju-on, the original Japanese Grudge franchise, sued production company Good Universe for breach of contract. However, according to court records, the case was dismissed shortly after.
