The month of March marks the prelude to the season’s climax in the German Bundesliga. Teams entered the first playoff round, but before that, on the first day of the month, the German Cup final was held and more than 10 000 spectators saw the coronation of an expected winner.

The Gerry-Weber sports hall in the small town of Halle organised the German Cup final for a tenth year in a row. In the 2015 edition, the record 12-time holders and defending champions VfB Friedrichshafen took on the league’s newcomers and total sensation SVG Luneburg. The lads from the small town coached by the retired national team middle blocker Stefan Hubner are enjoying the form of their lives. Underdogs in Halle, Luneburg were completely overwhelmed by the unfamiliar emotions of the Cup final. The spacious stadium, the lack of experience and the motivated opponents on the other side of the net were all contributing factors to Luneburg’s overall performance. Although being touted as the most anticipated event in German volleyball in March, the final offered no drama and turned out to be a recital by Stelian Moculescu‘s team.

Led by the tireless opposite Adrian Gontariu, Friedrichshafen took control early in the opening set and did not lose the momentum. With the tone set, they went on the rampage, picking up three quick sets to seal one of the shortest finals ever and the club’s 13th Cup.

It is not exaggerated to say Halle is a lucky place for the Bodensee side. They have won six of the ten events held there so far. The non-existent Generali Unterhaching holds the other four titles in Halle. As a matter of fact, these two sides are the only Cup holders since 2001, with Friedrichshafen dominant between 2001 and 2008.
