Olympique de Marseille received no bid for Aston Villa target Mattéo Guendouzi (23), according to the club’s Spanish president Pablo Longoria. Guendouzi has blossomed at Les Phocéens since arriving from Arsenal. After playing a key role in the side that reached the Champions League this season, the former PSG youth product earned his place in the France national team and featured in Les Bleus’ recent run to the World Cup final. The former Gunner reportedly developped a close bond with current Aston Villa manager Unai Emery during his Arsenal days.

The Villans were said to have made Guendouzi their transfer priority to strengthen their midfield, and West Ham were also keeping a close eye on him. The French international midfielder has a contract that runs until 2025 with Marseille. During a press conference for the introduction of the new signings in Moroccan midfielder Azzedine Ounahi and Portuguese striker Vitinha, Marseille president Pablo Longoria stated, as quoted by Le Phocéen, that no official bid came from English sides for the 23-year-old. However, they would be more open to a transfer for Guendouzi next summer. Marseille needs to sell in order to balance the books regarding Financial Fair Play. OM, along with seven other clubs, were fined €2m for exceeding the allowed deficit over three financial years.
