Following two busy days off the field with Los Angeles FC announing that defender Laurent Ciman has joined Dijon in Ligue 1 and Seattle Sounders forward Clint Dempsey announcing his retirement , the attention of MLS fans returned to the field on Wednesday with four matches.
The New York Red Bulls moved to the top of the table with a 1-0 win over the Houston Dynamo.
Brian White was the man of the moment for New York, the 22-year-old tapping home from close range for his first career MLS goal in the 55th minute.
The win vaulted New York above Atlanta United for the time being, though Atlanta holds a game in hand.
The other match of the night featuring Eastern Conference rivals pitted Wayne Rooney and D.C. United against the Philadelphia Union in a critical match for both sides as they chase the post-season.

CJ Sapong pounced on a rebound in the first half to put the visiting side in front with Fafa Picault doubling the lead just after the hour mark in a 2-0 win for the Union.

The result is shocking enough, but Chris Wondolowski’s late winner moving the veteran forward another goal closer to breaking Landon Donovan’s all-time league mark.
The goal leaves Wondolowski just four goals away from setting the new mark as he currently sits on 142 for his career.
