LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Norton’s (Mass.) Kelly Nelson, Victory Christian (Valparaiso, Ind.) Academy’s Maria Reisinger, Orange’s (Hillsborough, N.C.) Mia Davidson, East Carter’s (Grayson, Ky.) Montana Fouts and Copper Hills’ (West Jordan, Utah) Makaiya Gomez were selected MaxPreps/NFCA National High School Player of the Week winners for their outstanding play during the week of April 3-9.
East Region
Highlighted by a perfect game, Nelson was 2-0 with a save and 39 strikeouts over 16 innings of work. In her first start of 2017, she fanned 17 of 18 batters in a six-inning perfect game against Middleborough. She also earned a complete-game victory against Medfield in which she allowed just three hits, struck out 13 and walked two. In between those two starts, she recorded a three-inning save by striking out nine and surrendering a hit over the final three innings in a 5-0 triumph against Medway. For the week, she posted a 0.44 ERA and held her opposition to a 0.77 batting average. Nelson chipped in at the plate with four hits, including 3-for-4 performance against Medfield in which she recorded three doubles and four RBI.
North Region
Reisinger keyed Victory Christian at the plate and in the circle in the first two games of the 2017 season. She was a perfect 8-for-8, with two doubles, two home runs, 11 RBI, seven runs scored and a 2.000 slugging percentage in wins over Gary West Side and Families of Faith Christian Academy. In the opener against the Cougars, Reisinger was 3-for-3 with a double, five RBI and a pair of runs. The senior followed by going 5-for-5 with a double, two homers, six RBI and five runs scored. Additionally, she twirled a five-inning no-hitter with eight strikeouts against Family of Faith Christian. Reisinger also tossed five innings with another eight punchouts against Gary West Side.
South Region
Davidson keyed the Panthers to a doubleheader sweep of South Durham, which included a whopping 10 RBI in game two. The senior captain opened with a double, homer, four RBI and three runs in game one. She followed by going 4-for-4 with two doubles, two long balls, 10 RBI and four runs scored. For the week, she hit .875 (7-for-8) with three doubles, three home runs, 14 RBI, seven runs scored and a monstrous 2.375 slugging percentage.
South Central Region
Fouts tossed four shutouts, including a perfect game against Fern Creek and a 21-strikeout performance in a complete game win over Graves County, struck out 71, walked just one and posted a 0.22 ERA in 31 innings pitched. She twirled a one-hit shutout with 18 strikeouts in a 2-0 win over Maumee and followed that with her five-inning perfect game (11 strikeouts). Against Graves County, she surrendered just two hits and recorded all 21 outs on her own in the 7-0 win over Graves County. After suffering a defeat in which she struck out 12, Fouts rebound with a five-inning one-hit shutout (9 K) of Fern Creek. At the plate, she knocked in both runs in the 2-0 Maumee victory and added three RBI in the first game against Fern Creek.
West Region
In a pair of wins, Gomez was a perfect 9-for-9 with 12 RBI and seven runs scored. She went 4-for-4 with a double, two triples, five RBI and three runs scored against Jordan. The freshman outfielder upped her output a day later against Taylorsville by recording five hits with two of those leaving the yard. She knocked in seven runs and scored four times in the 19-16 victory. Gomez registered a 1.000 on base percentage and slugged 2.222.
