At the TCA winter press tour, FX CEO John Landgraf took the stage to announce a third and final season of Legion, and the pickup of Brian K. Vaughn’s Y: The Last Man to series. The longtime television executive also shed some light on Netflix’s recent ratings reveal that both Sex Education and You were projected to be watched by “40 million accounts” in their first month.

Landgraf began by explaining that most TV networks measure viewership by “average audience” per episode, which takes into account how long a viewer watches a show, while “Silicon Valley companies” like Facebook and Netflix measure by “video starts,” rather than completion rates, “which is not a remotely accurate representation of long-form program performance,” according to Landgraf.

While 40 million viewers sounds like a major victory for the streaming provider, Landgraf pointed out that Netflix later clarified this statement by explaining that the announcement meant that “40 million accounts watched at least 70 percent of one of You’s 10 episodes,” which ends up being “one-fifth of what Netflix’s number implies,” around “8 million average viewers.” While 8 million viewers is impressive in today’s fragmented TV landscape, Landgraf pointed out that it’s still far less than “an average audience of 40 million viewers, which would make You the number one show on US television, bigger than Game of Thrones.”

For Sex Education, ratings measurement company Nielsen places the show’s viewership somewhere in the realm of “3 million average US viewers per episode [in its first two weeks],” Landgraf said. “40 million people are not watching every episode of You … Stranger Things is absolutely a home run, but it’s a huge outlier on the platform, just as Game of Thrones is an outlier for HBO and The Walking Dead is an outlier for AMC.”

Landgraf often uses the term “batting average” when discussing the success of a given network. Of the major television networks, FX has the best average when it comes to “best of the year lists” from critics. With only 14 original series in 2018 for FX, 13 of them made at least one of those lists, according to Landgraf. In comparison, Netflix released a staggering 530 original programs in 2018, with 62 of those making the cut. Sure, 62 is a lot of shows, but if we use Landgraf’s law of averages, Netflix is at 11.6 percent, with FX holding strong at 92.8 percent.

Landgraf acknowledged that Netflix has created “good shows and numerous hits” with the likes of Stranger Things, but reiterated that “Netflix has also made and launched a multitude of consumer failures, failing to ever report [them],” and that by cherrypicking its successes in revealing viewership data without proper context, they’re creating a “myth of a magic bullet that has eluded everyone else since the beginning of television.”

When Landgraf was asked if he thought Netflix would someday “implode,” given their spending and the impending competition from other streamers like Disney+ and WarnerMedia, he admitted: “I’ve often been surprised by what they’ve done. I find them unpredictable. 70 percent of the usage on their platform comes from acquired content… a lot of that’s going to become unavailable to them over time. One of the things that make brands work over time is legacy… there’s a deep attachment that lasts over a longer period of time. They get a massive amount of usage very rapidly, but that usage just tails off rapidly. Do I think Netflix won’t be here in 10, 20 years? I don’t think that, I think they’re going to be a part of the landscape of television programming for longer than we can count, and I don’t begrudge them their existence. I [just] don’t think that winner take all or winner take most mentality is good for America.”
