23-year-old French international Presnel Kimpembe has today signed a new contract with his hometown club Paris Saint-Germain. Kimpembe’s new deal, which runs until 2023, is not only a testament to the young centre-back’s importance to PSG, but also a real vote of confidence in the Frenchman’s ability to become one of the best defenders in the world.

Originally from Beaumont-sur-Oise just an hour outside of Paris, Kimpembe has been with Les Parisiens since 2005. Although the young defender didn’t break into the first team until 2014, he has since then accumulated quite the trophy haul including three Ligue 1s, four Coupe de Frances, three Coupe de la Ligues, three Trophée des Champions, and one World Cup.

Kimpembe is a part of a young crop of talents that have broken into a star-studded PSG team, and despite strong competition from Thiago Silva and Marquinhos at the centre-back position, the 23-year-old has cemented himself as a regular performer in the first eleven. In the 2017/18 season Kimbembe appeared in a total of 38 matches for PSG, playing in just 28 the year before.

The slow ascension of Kimpembe through the club is a welcome development for PSG, who had previously struggled with retaining and developing its own youth players. Kingsley Coman and Moussa Dembélé are just two examples, with 18-year-old Claudio Gomes a potential addition to that list.

Having signed a contract until 2023 on the same day as his 23rd birthday, Kimpembe is set for a big year this season. With a fairly thin centre-back core, the French international will get plenty of opportunities to impress under new manager Thomas Tuchel.
