ALEXANDRIA, VA—A federal judge in Alexandria ordered Paul Manafort to be moved to the Alexandria jail ahead of his July 25 trial.
Manafort, the former campaign manager for President Trump, has been jailed at Northern Neck Regional Jail since a judge denied bail. Judge T.S. Ellis said the move will “ensure that the defendant has access to his counsel and can adequately prepare his defense,” The Washington Post reported.
But Attorneys for Manafort say moving to the Alexandria jail would present difficulty before the trial. They previously asked for the trial date to be moved due to the distance between the DC region and Northern Neck and for the trial be moved to Roanoke, citing potential bias of Northern Virginians against their client and the Trump administration. The judge will allow prosecutors to respond to these requests by Friday.
Manafort faces trial for charges related to bank and tax fraud in Alexandria federal court and a second trial in DC federal court in September.
