Tom Scholes runs the rule on France after their 3-2 win over England tonight.

Hugo Lloris: 5

After his howler last time out against Sweden, what Hugo Lloris needed was a quiet evening with very little to do. Despite conceding two goals, albeit two strikes he could do nothing about, Lloris had exactly that. Ryan Bertrand’s effort in the first half forced the captain into a save, but his second half was rather dull following the early Harry Kane penalty.

Djibril Sidibé: 6

The Monaco full back will be very pleased to score his first international goal, and he was quite good going forward at times, almost acting like a right winger with Ousmane Dembélé occupying the 10 position. His threat down the right hand side was, often, too much for England’s wing backs to cope with, and his ability to ghost into the box for his goal summed up his performance. England’s 3-4-3 gave Sidibe acres of space.

Raphaël Varane: 4

If you take away the red card, Varane was impressive at the back, but you cannot ignore the sending off (regardless of whether you think it was a red or not). In the end it didn’t matter too much as France were arguably better after the red card. For the time he was on the pitch, Varane was generally assured and can feel slightly hard done by with the decision.

Samuel Umtiti: 6

Another one scoring their first international goal, Umtiti was good at the back. There was a bit of a defensive mix up prior to the second England goal, but for the majority of the game Umtiti was solid. Nothing spectacular about his performance, but he has come on a lot for Les Bleus after his first few appearances.

Benjamin Mendy: N/A

Unfortunately for the Manchester City target, he only lasted around 20 minutes and had to be taken off before making any real impact on the game. Hopefully, his injury isn’t too serious.

Thomas Lemar: 6

A quick and pacey performance from the winger, who has been linked heavily with a move to the Premier League, Thomas Lemar showed his quality but you feel like he could have done more. He wasn’t as dangerous as he has been this season and felt like a bystander at times, but when he was running at the England defence, you could tell that they didn’t know what to do to stop him.

N’Golo Kanté: 6

A typical Kante showing. Nothing fancy, nothing spectacular and won’t get all the headlines, but his defensive mindset allowed those around him to float forward. If it wasn’t for Kante, maybe Dembele and Pogba wouldn’t have played as well, and it makes you wonder whether Didier Deschamps will need Blaise Matuidi at all in the future?

Paul Pogba: 8

Don’t tell Twitter this, but when you put Paul Pogba in a good system with brilliant players around him, he can be world class. I know, what a shock, right? Pogba was exceptional in the middle and completely dominated Eric Dier and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from first minute to last. His passing was fantastic, his movement dragged England all over the shop and his ability to switch the tempo in an instant meant he was one of the best players this evening.

Ousmane Dembélé: 9

The Man of the Match tonight, Ousmane Dembele was simply sensational. His pace was frightening, his finishing meant he got on the score sheet and he was untouchable at times. There’s a clip going round of him completely leaving Kyle Walker in his wake, and that’s when you know someone is rapid. By far and away the best performer on the night, Dembele was fun to watch and impossible to play against.

Olivier Giroud: 6

The Arsenal man was largely ineffective during his time on the pitch, despite having his lovely volley correctly ruled out for offside. He wasn’t entirely in the game tonight and being the player subbed off for Laurent Koscielny didn’t help his cause, either. A poor night by Giroud’s standards, but maybe on another day he could’ve been more effective.

Kylian Mbappé: 8

A superb showing once again from the youngster, with his pace and elusiveness sending England defenders sliding onto the floor multiple times. The more you watch Mbappe, the more you are convinced he is a superstar in the making. He is a joy to behold and when he shows the confidence he showed tonight you realize that he isn’t fazed at all, no matter the situation. He has the ability to pull anything off and he’s probably disappointed that he didn’t get onto the score sheet.

Substitutes:

Laurent Koscielny: 6

Coming on for Olivier Giroud, Koscielny was largely quiet seeing as his introduction sparked France into another gear where they completely dominated the game. Defensively, he didn’t have much to do, yet his introduction allowed some of the players to go forward knowing they were back in their original back four.

Lucas Digne: 5

Introduced early on for the injured Benjamin Mendy, Digne was shaky at times but was hardly tested by the England forwards. A very unspectacular performance, but with no mistakes and nothing negative to write home about.
