Sony, which has released the financially successful Venom and highly critically successful Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, is teasing it has the next “seven or eight years” of its Marvel properties laid out, for both movies and TV.

In an interview with Variety, Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman Tony Vinciquerra and Sony Pictures Television chairman Mike Hopkins discussed Sony’s plans for its Spider-Man related properties in the future, and it appears Sony has a pretty clear vision of where they’re going.

“We have the next seven or eight years laid out as to what we’re going to do with that asset, and that will not only be on the film side — it’ll be on the TV side,” said Vinciquerra. “Our television group will have its own set of characters from within that universe that we will seek to develop.”

Avengers: Endgame

As far as the MCU Spider-Man goes, Avengers: Endgame is the next time we'll see that version of the character. That's despite the fact that Tom Holland's Peter Parker was among the numerous heroes who died at the end of Avengers: Infinity War. We're expecting most, if not necessarily all of these characters to be resurrected in Avengers 4, but actual plot details remain scarce right now. The film opens on April 26.”,”height”:1080,”width”:1920,”url”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/08/14/avengers-4-1534272477132.jpg”,”styleUrl”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/08/14/avengers-4-1534272477132_{size}.jpg”,”credit”:””,”objectRelationName”:””,”objectRelationUrl”:””,”albumName”:”Every Spider-Man Movie Spin-Off in Development”,”relativePosition”:”02″,”albumTotalCount”:14},{“caption”:”Spider-Man: Far From Home

A sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming is in the works for July 5, 2019, called Spider-Man: Far From Home. (We were hoping for Spider-Man: Prom!) Marvel's Kevin Feige has said that the film will mark the start of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's fourth Phase. Mysterio will appear, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, though so far the film's promotional materials are positioning him as a good guy.
After Venom, Morbius will be the next Spider-Man supporting character to star in his own SUMC (Sony's Universe of Marvel Characters) movie. Jared Leto has been cast as Dr. Michael Morbius, a brilliant scientist who inadvertently transforms himself into a "living vampire" and becomes an outcast. Matt Sazama and Buck Sharpless (Dracula Untold, The Last Witch Hunter, and Gods of Egypt) penned the screenplay, and Daniel Espinosa (Safe House, Life) has directs.

Venom was the first Spider-Man character to get a movie out of the new Sony universe line. The first film was a hit, and the sequel is expected to see the return of Tom Hardy as the anti-hero Eddie Brock/Venom. The first film's screenwriter Kelly Marcel is reportedly returning for Venom 2 as well, and ditto for Michelle Williams and Woody Harrelson… which means we're in all likelihood going to finally get a live-action Carnage. A director has not yet been named, and it's unlikely we'll see the original Venom helmer Ruben Fleischer return as he's busy with Zombieland 2.”,”height”:791,”width”:1406,”url”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/08/14/venom-1534272477152.jpg”,”styleUrl”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/08/14/venom-1534272477152_{size}.jpg”,”credit”:””,”objectRelationName”:””,”objectRelationUrl”:””,”albumName”:”Every Spider-Man Movie Spin-Off in Development”,”relativePosition”:”05″,”albumTotalCount”:14},{“caption”:”Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2

Into the Spider-Verse was another big hit for Sony, in this case both critically and commercially, so it's no surprise that a sequel to the innovative film is in the works. Joaquim Dos Santos, known for his work on Justice League Unlimited, Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, is being tapped to direct the sequel. Details are scarce, though reports indicate that “seeds have been planted” in the first film for a sequel.”,”height”:700,”width”:1243,”url”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/08/14/into-the-spider-verse-1534272477139.jpg”,”styleUrl”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/08/14/into-the-spider-verse-1534272477139_{size}.jpg”,”credit”:””,”objectRelationName”:””,”objectRelationUrl”:””,”albumName”:”Every Spider-Man Movie Spin-Off in Development”,”relativePosition”:”06″,”albumTotalCount”:14},{“caption”:”Untitled Female Cast Into the Spider-Verse Spin-Off

Sony is also shining a spotlight on Kraven the Hunter. One of Spider-Man's oldest rogues, Kraven is a skilled hunter who sets his sights on Spider-Man after conquering all other prey in the animal kingdom. He's also the central antagonist in the seminal comic storyline Kraven's Last Hunt, which could easily serve as a source of inspiration for the movie. For now, though, all that's known is that Richard Wenk (The Equalizer) has been hired to write the screenplay.”,”height”:728,”width”:1293,”url”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/08/14/kraven-1534272477144.jpg”,”styleUrl”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/08/14/kraven-1534272477144_{size}.jpg”,”credit”:””,”objectRelationName”:””,”objectRelationUrl”:””,”albumName”:”Every Spider-Man Movie Spin-Off in Development”,”relativePosition”:”08″,”albumTotalCount”:14},{“caption”:”Black Cat

Along with Venom, one of the earliest Spider-Man spinoff movies Sony pursued was Silver & Black, a team-up movie featuring mercenary Silver Sable and master thief/occasional Spider-Man love interest Black Cat. While Sony went as far as hiring director Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Secret Life of Bees) and dating the film for a February 2019 release, it's since fallen off the schedule. Instead, the studio is now reworking Silver & Black into solo movies for the characters.
Silver Sable got her perhaps biggest role recently in the Spider-Man PS4 game.
Nightwatch is easily the most obscure Marvel character being tapped for the SUMC.
A more recent addition to Spider-Man's world, Silk is a heroine who was bitten by the same radioactive spider that gave Peter Parker his powers. Resurfacing after a decade spent locked in an underground bunker, Cindy Moon has followed the example of Spider-Man and become a costumed superhero. Cindy has actually made small appearances in Spider-Man: Homecoming and Avengers: Infinity War (played by Tiffany Espensen). But as it looks like the SUMC is separate from the MCU, we assume the role will be recast for the Silk movie. Little else is known about the project right now, other than that Sony hopes to use it as an opportunity to boost superhero representation by spotlighting a Korean-American heroine.”,”height”:1080,”width”:1922,”url”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/08/14/silk-1534272477148.jpg”,”styleUrl”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/08/14/silk-1534272477148_{size}.jpg”,”credit”:””,”objectRelationName”:””,”objectRelationUrl”:””,”albumName”:”Every Spider-Man Movie Spin-Off in Development”,”relativePosition”:12,”albumTotalCount”:14},{“caption”:”Jackpot

Another fairly recent addition to the Spider-Man universe, Jackpot has often fought alongside Spider-Man in defense of New York City. When she was first introduced, readers were led to believe she was actually Mary Jane Watson in disguise. Instead, it was eventually revealed that Jackpot is an identity used by two different women – genetic researcher Sara Ehret and her admirer, Alana Jobson. Variety reported in August 2018 that a Jackpot movie is currently in development, but no cast, director or writer have been revealed so far.”,”height”:674,”width”:1200,”url”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/08/14/jackpot-1534272477141.jpg”,”styleUrl”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/08/14/jackpot-1534272477141_{size}.jpg”,”credit”:””,”objectRelationName”:””,”objectRelationUrl”:””,”albumName”:”Every Spider-Man Movie Spin-Off in Development”,”relativePosition”:13,”albumTotalCount”:14},{“caption”:”The Future…

Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman Tony Vinciquerra and Sony Pictures Television chairman Mike Hopkins recently said that the studio has “seven or eight years” of its Marvel properties planned for both film and TV. “We have the next seven or eight years laid out as to what we’re going to do with that asset, and that will not only be on the film side — it’ll be on the TV side,” said Vinciquerra. “Our television group will have its own set of characters from within that universe that we will seek to develop.” How many of the projects already reported on fall into these plans is unclear, but one thing is certain: The Spider-Man universe is only going to get bigger on the big and small screens in the coming years.”,”height”:1000,”width”:2000,”url”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2019/03/13/spider-man-universe-1552502527772.jpg”,”styleUrl”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2019/03/13/spider-man-universe-1552502527772_{size}.jpg”,”credit”:””,”objectRelationName”:””,”objectRelationUrl”:””,”albumName”:”Every Spider-Man Movie Spin-Off in Development”,”relativePosition”:14,”albumTotalCount”:14}]’

According to Hopkins, the team on the television side is “pretty far down the road in terms of working through which characters we think could be their own star of a series.”

“We’re developing a lot of Marvel-related content, and I think we’ll be out in the market very soon with something really, really big and transformational for us, because we’ve not done any shows with Marvel before, with Marvel IP,” said Hopkins. “So that’s a big piece of development that we’re onto… I think we aspire to have several shows in a universe that we create that can pollinate between each other, and to [be] working with a partner to make that happen.”

While it’s currently unclear if Sony intends to partner with a streaming service like Netflix or Hulu to facilitate its Marvel shows, Hopkins reportedly didn’t deny the Disney+ streaming service is also a potential name in the mix.

Sony has several Spider-Man spinoff movies in development, including Jared Leto’s Morbius, which recently released its first on-set photo, as well as Black Cat, Silver Sable, Kraven the Hunter, and Silk. There are two Marvel-Sony movies set for 2020 releases, one of which is Morbius, and the is likely a sequel to Venom.

On top of this, the critically acclaimed animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is reportedly getting a sequel, and an all-female spinoff. On top of this, Sony is reportedly planning one or more television shows based off characters from Into the Spider-Verse.
