LYONS, IL — A student at District 103’s George Washington Middle School died Wednesday of a self-inflicted gunshot, school officials said. A spokesman for the district said at around 1:30 p.m. that the seventh-grader shot himself at the school, located at 8101 Ogden Ave. He was taken to Loyola Hospital, where he died.
The student shot himself in a restroom at the school, a source told WBBM.
“Lyons Police responded quickly and at no time were other students, faculty or staff at the school in danger,” a spokesman for the Village of Lyons said in a statement. “The school was put in lockdown, and students were released at around 2:30 p.m.”
“This kind of incident is always a great tragedy for everyone, the family, the students, the school and the entire community,” Lyons Village President Christopher Getty said. “We’re heartbroken to hear that this happened.”
Lyons police are investigating the shooting. The student’s name is not being released, according to the village.
