A case of medical negligence and deficiency in service surfaced after the Delhi State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission found a doctor to have “wrongly operated” on the left foot of a teenage girl instead of the polio-stricken right foot in 2003.
The patient, who underwent the surgery for a polio-related deformity, has accordingly been compensated with Rs 10 lakh for the post-surgery injury she suffered, impeding her education and matrimonial prospects.
“The doctor committed negligence. He is, therefore, directed to compensate complainant Harpreet Kaur by paying her Rs 10 lakh for the injury and mental agony caused to her. She could not pursue her studies and her matrimonial prospects were badly affected,” held N P Kaushik, the commission’s judicial member.
