Test for floating solar plant in the Mediterranean Sea

French company SolarinBlue has begun a test of its floating photovoltaic platform in the Mediterranean port of Sète.

Two units of the modular system were moved to a position about 1.5 kilometers from shore. Plans are to expand the »Sun’Sète« project to a total of 25 units and 300 kilowatts of power with a covered area of 0.5 hectares. The energy will be transmitted to the port facilities through an underwater cable.

SolarinBlue specifies dimensions of 12 by 9 meters at 3.5 meters height for its platforms built of steel and recycled plastic (HDPE) for 30 kilowatts of photovoltaic power each. The weight is eight tons.

The company says it already has approval for a much larger project in India, where installation could begin »before Q1 2024.« Accordingly, platforms for one megawatt of power are to be anchored near Mangalore, around ten kilometers off the coast.
