Kyle O’Reilly is first in line for a shot at Finn Balor’s NXT Championship.

Balor will defend his NXT Championship against O’Reilly at TakeOver on Sunday, October 4. That was confirmed when O’Reilly won the number one contender’s gauntlet eliminator match in the main event of tonight’s NXT.

The rules of the five-man gauntlet eliminator match were that it started with two wrestlers in the ring, then a new participant was added every four minutes. The only way to be eliminated was via pinfall or submission.

O’Reilly submitted Cameron Grimes with a kneebar at the end of the match to become the number one contender to Balor’s title. The match started off with O’Reilly and Kushida. Bronson Reed, Timothy Thatcher, and Grimes were the other participants.

Kushida was the first to be eliminated after being attacked by the interfering Velveteen Dream. O’Reilly eliminated Reed, Thatcher, and Grimes.

Undisputed Era’s Adam Cole and Roderick Strong celebrated with O’Reilly after tonight’s main event. Balor then came out to the stage, stared down O’Reilly, and posed to close the show.

Triple H tweeted about O’Reilly’s win: “[Kyle O’Reilly’s] success in #WWENXT shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone. A student of his craft, he’s a dedicated (and decorated Superstar). THIS #NXTTakeOver match has the ability to steal the show.”

Balor vs. O’Reilly is the third match to be made official for the October 4 TakeOver event. NXT Women’s Champion Io Shirai will defend her title against Candice LeRae at the show. NXT North American Champion Damian Priest will also defend his title against Johnny Gargano.
