Broadway’s biggest night was packed with big wins.
The 71st annual Tony Awards toasted the best of the theater season Sunday evening at New York’s Radio City Music Hall, where Kevin Spacey took center stage as host.
A year after Hamilton stormed the Tonys with 11 wins on a record 16 nominations, Lin-Manuel Miranda returned to the stage to present Dear Evan Hanson with the Tony for Best Musical.

The musical beat stiff competition in the category, including Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, an adaptation from a slice of Tolstoy’s War and Peace, which received a leading 12 nominations; a charming adaptation of a beloved movie favorite in Groundhog Day; and the heartwarming true story of a small Canadian town helping stranded airline passengers in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks in Come From Away.
Earlier in the night, Dear Evan Hanson‘s Ben Platt claimed the trophy for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical for his emotional portrayal of a young man desperate to connect.
Bette Midler thanked the Tony voters—“many of whom I’ve actually dated,” she joked — for giving her the Tony for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical for her performance in Hello, Dolly!, which won Best Revival of a Musical.
Nine musicals performed on the Tonys stage during the telecast, which aired live on CBS. They included the four Best Musical nominees, revival nominees Hello, Dolly!, Falsettos, and Miss Saigon, and the casts of War Paint and Bandstand. Last year’s Tony winners Cynthia Erivo and Leslie Odom Jr. also performed.
