#1 St Cloud State scores 38-3 victory over MSUM in Pierz
The #1 St. Cloud State University wrestling team (13-0, 5-0 NSIC) continued its run through the NSIC schedule with a convincing 38-3 win over Minnesota State, Moorhead (1-6, 0-5 NSIC) on Thursday, Jan. 30 in a match wrestled on the mats at Healy High School in Pierz, Minn.
In a homecoming of sorts for senior 174-pounder Kolton Eischens, the Huskies were the host team in Pierz, Minn., which is hometown for Eischens. A top prep wrestler for the Pioneers during his high school career at Pierz, Eischens capped the night for the Huskies with a 21-5 tech fall win at 4:38 over MSUM’s Evan Foster at 174-pounds.
The fourth ranked wrestler in NCAA DII wrestling at 174-pounds, Eischens now owns an 11-1 record for the Huskies.
The evening opened for the Huskies with a 6-2 win by Billy Pitzner at 184-pounds over MSUM’s Mitchell Kotschevar. At 197-pounds, #9 ranked Noah Ryan added a 4-0 win over MSUM’s Logan Rhode.
The Dragons gains their lone points of the night with a close 3-1 win by Jordan Magnuson over SCSU’s Tyler Hugg at 285-pounds. The MSUM rally was short-lived as Brandon Betandcourt posted a fall at 1:51 against Cameron Williams of MSUM at 125-pounds. The Huskies’ Garrett Vos received a forfeit win at 133-pounds to move SCSU’s lead in the match to 12-3.
At 141-pounds, Joey Bianchini scored a 15-1 major decision over MSUM’s Mason Schulz and #2 James Pleski battled through a close bout at 149-pounds to gain a victory over MSUM’s Zach Scott.
At 157-pounds, #2 Jake Barzowski posted a big 19-1 tech fall victory to gain the extra points at 4:10 against MSUM’s Tell Ward. At 165-pounds, Devin Donovan added an 8-5 decision over MSUM’s Braydon Ortloff to set the stage for Eischens’ hometown heroics in the final bout of the day at 174-pounds.
The Dragons are off until Feb. 6 when they compete at Minnesota State University Mankato.
The Huskies have now won 61 consecutive dual matches, which is an NCAA Division II record. SCSU will continue its NSIC season on Saturday, Feb. 1 with a match at Minnesota State University in Mankato, Minn.
